More than 270 delegates from Active Retirement Associations across Ireland gathered at the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone, this week for the 2026 National Annual General Meeting of Active Retirement Ireland (ARI).
The AGM was addressed by Minister of State for Older People and Housing, Kieran O’Donnell TD, who acknowledged the invaluable contribution older people make to communities throughout Ireland and reaffirmed the importance of supporting people to age positively, actively and independently.
The packed two-day programme brought together members from every region of the country to celebrate the achievements of the past year, elect the organisation’s National Board and help shape Active Retirement Ireland’s future direction.
Delegates heard an inspiring keynote address from Professor Rónán Collins, leading geriatrician and National Clinical Lead for Stroke, who explored the importance of positive ageing, brain health and intergenerational connectedness. Members also welcomed Alan Raftery, Solicitor with Holohan Law, who delivered an informative presentation on wills, enduring powers of attorney and other legal safeguards to help people plan confidently for the future.
The AGM also showcased the talents of members through the National Art and Craft Exhibition, which attracted more than 80 entries from across the country, while delegates celebrated the launch of Active Voice, Active Retirement Ireland’s new national members’ magazine.
On the opening day of the AGM, Alison Bough, Head of Policy & Advocacy, facilitated a policy and campaigning workshop attended by more than 60 members. The interactive session identified the issues that will shape Active Retirement Ireland’s advocacy priorities over the next five years, ensuring members’ voices remain at the heart of the organisation’s policy and campaigning work.
Members also elected the National Board for 2026–2027, with Mai Quaid re-elected as National President and Maura McAuliffe elected Vice President.
Speaking following her re-election, Mai Quaid, National President of Active Retirement Ireland, said:
“Our National AGM is one of the highlights of the year, bringing together members from across Ireland to celebrate our achievements, share ideas and shape the future of our organisation. I was delighted to welcome Minister Kieran O’Donnell TD and our guest speakers to Athlone. In particular, I would like to thank Professor Rónán Collins for his inspiring and thought-provoking keynote address, which highlighted the importance of positive ageing, brain health and the value of staying connected throughout later life. I also extend my sincere thanks to Alan Raftery for his practical and informative presentation.
“Most importantly, I would like to thank every member who travelled to Athlone. The enthusiasm, creativity and commitment shown over the two days demonstrate the enormous contribution older people continue to make in communities across Ireland. I am honoured to continue serving as National President and look forward to working with our newly elected Board as we continue to strengthen Active Retirement Ireland and be a strong voice for older people.”
