Ireland has officially co-sponsored the HRC58 Resolution on the Rights of Older Persons as adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council on 3 April 2025, marking a proud moment in our nation’s commitment to global human rights and a vital win for older people everywhere.
The HRC58 resolution is critical as it establishes an intergovernmental working group to begin drafting a UN convention on the human rights of older persons. This long-awaited move will address critical gaps in international law and ensure older people’s rights are protected, promoted and upheld. With the support of more than 70 UN member states, it signals powerful momentum in the global campaign for equality in ageing.
Active Retirement Ireland Head of Policy and Programmes Alison Bough said “Active Retirement Ireland urged Ireland to join this vital movement, reaching out to key figures in government to ask for their support in co-sponsoring the resolution. We’re proud to say that Ireland has answered the call, standing with other nations in support of the rights and dignity of older people.
“We extend our sincere thanks to the Department of the Taoiseach, Tánaiste Simon Harris, Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD, Minister Kieran O’Donnell TD and Ambassador H.E. Mr. Noel White and the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations in Geneva for their engagement.
“This is a human rights victory for Ireland, and a milestone for older people around the world.”
