Statement: 05/02/2019

The Board of Active Retirement Ireland, the country’s largest older person’s organisation, has today issued a statement of unequivocal support for Irish nurses and midwives who are currently engaged in their second day of industrial action over pay and conditions.

President of Active Retirement Ireland Kay Murphy said, “As older people are more likely to need healthcare more often, we understand all too well the strain nurses and midwives are under. Our national organisation supports them 100% in their campaign for a pay increase and a return to conditions of safe staffing.”

The organisation also encouraged its members to show their support at the picket lines and at the national demonstration in Dublin on February 9th.

Kay Murphy said, “We won’t be passing pickets, except in emergency cases, but we encourage members to show their support on strike days and, where possible, to attend the National Rally for Nurses and Midwives this Saturday.”
